Outer Space Treaty Posted, Plus Narrative History Of Same Also Posted

The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 has now been posted in the Star Wars section
of this website.

Here are the two key paragraphs from the Annex section regarding military use of Outer Space and nuclear weapons in space:

Article IV

States Parties to the Treaty undertake not to place in orbit around the Earth any objects carrying nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction, install such weapons on celestial bodies, or station such weapons in outer space in any other manner.

The Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used by all States Parties to the Treaty exclusively for peaceful purposes. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military maneuvers on celestial bodies shall be forbidden. The use of military personnel for scientific research or for any other peaceful purposes shall not be prohibited. The use of any equipment or facility necessary for peaceful exploration of the Moon and other celestial bodies shall also not be prohibited.

The problem is that under George Bush II we, the United States of America, have/has decided to put weapons up into outer space, including NUCLEAR weapons, specifically under the PROJECT PROMETHEUS program launched in November 2003. This is in conjunction with our push to dominate space, to the exclusion of other nations on Earth,
as stated in Vision for 2020 (located on this website in its full color 17 page totality in the Key Documents to Read section, under Star Wars) designed by our military.

A big problem here is that we now also have Sean O?Keefe as the new head of NASA.
He used to be the Secretary of the Navy. And he has engineered the new policy of NASA
to be what he calls ‘dual use.’ What that means is all future NASA missions shall henceforth
be BOTH civilian and military in function.

In addition, if you go the MISSION noted on the NASA website, you will notice this:

‘Today, only nuclear power can enable these scientifically vital, but incredibly challenging missions.’

It is just one page, so it might be worth a quick read.

Now this is in spite of the fact that the USA was the pioneer in developing photovoltaic solar energy, which is now the power system on all USA satellites! And the European Space Agency is not using nuclear power for their space power supply. Know that on March 2, 2004 they launched the Rosetta space probe to travel
beyond Jupiter, to rendezvous with the Churyumov-Gerasimenko Comet on a 7 BILLION
kilometer journey. The Rosetta probe’s source of power is high efficiency solar cells.

Here is a rather extremely bizarre furtherance of this way of thinking by the pro-nuclear Outer Space Treaty-defiant proponents who reckon it all makes sense. This is quoting from an article in Technology magazine, January 2005 re Project Orion that was halted due to the nuclear test ban treaty of 1963. The writer, Mark Williams, says this about Project Orion:

“(It was) a top secret effort to develop massive spaceships on the order of thousands to millions of tons — propelled by nuclear detonations. In terms of physics, Orion wasn’t necessarily insane. Stanislaw Ulam, the coinventor of the hydrogen bomb, had conceived the idea the day after the first U.S. atomic bomb test in 1945. Project Orion was led by Ted Taylor, designer of the U.S. nuclear arsenal’s largest and smallest bombs, and included Freeman Dyson, an architect of quantum electrodynamics theory.”

Here’s how Orion’s concept might have worked:

“Imagine an enormous external combustion engine. First a nuclear bomb would be ejected through a hole in the bottom of Orion’s hull and detonated. Matter packed around the bomb would become exploding plasma. A thousand ton aluminum pusher plate, fixed to the ship’s stern on giant shock absorbers, would shield and cushion the ship from the blast. The shock would have propelled Orion through space.”

Doesn’t that sound fine?

I have a problem with Technology magazine’s approach to its stories and articles. It’s a great magazine, published in conjunction with MIT up in Massachusetts. But it’s always on the order of >> this is great, with the technology’s downside unmentioned. That’s also the policy of our government with regard to technology: Yeah, CHARGE! Go Biotech! we’ve got to be the leaders, even though genetically altered foods may be cancer causing, may cause death (L-tryptophan had a genetically altered version marketed that killed at least 100 people and caused a disease called ‘Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome,’ or EMS, that crippled 5,OOO to 10,000 people), and have been shown to produce increased growth of the microvilli in the intestine that could lead to intestinal maladies and cancer. Plus the already seen effects of genetically altered crops mutating into weeds, spreading wildly, resistant to the pesticides or other ways to curb them that we currently know. Or these plants’ pollen blowing across our prairies, contaminating the genomes of non-genetically altered crops. Corn and canola most specifically. Viva nuclear power and nuclear weapons in space! possibly with proponents being ignorant of the fact that plutonium, produced in nuclear reactors to the extent of 500-1000 pounds on average per year, per 1000 megawatt plant, has a lung cancer causing dose of but one microgram. A microgram is one millionth of a gram. There are 454 grams in one pound. Which means just one POUND of plutonium, if dispersed in small enough particles to fit in your lung’s sacs, called ‘alveoli,’ could cause 454 MILLION people to contract a lung cancer. And twenty pounds could theoretically do the same for every human being here on Earth. Plus, remember that the concept of the nuclear plant was originally used to MAKE plutonium for our first nuclear weapons. And just 12 pounds of plutonium, according to Karl Grossman, author of ‘Nuclear Power, What They Don’t Want You To Know,’ is enough to power a nuclear bomb of the strength of each of the two that destroyed Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan, to end World War Two back in 1945.

Who do we think we are? Yes, plenty of us think George Bush is an ignoramus, especially scientifically, with his strutting posture and belligerent approach to the rest of human civilization. How can we be so bold, and ridiculous, to think we can get away with launching nuclear weapons into space in defiance of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 that we ourselves primarily authorized after the USSR put up its Sputnik satellite, spooking us and the rest of the world to worry that they’d dominate space, and foist their communist totalitarianism on the rest of the planet?

Dream on about powering spaceships with nuclear explosions, fixed on the idea that nothing could possibly go wrong, let’s do it!
